“Rules! We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Rules.”

Please join us Saturday, February 11, 2017, at 10:30am at Arlington Community Church when we welcome speaker Richard L. “Doc” Mabry as he presents, “Rules! We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Rules.”

“Rules. Elmore Leonard says there are ten. James Scott Bell boils it down to three. Dave Barry has only one. Anne Rice says there are none…And still others have their own “take” on this subject. So what’s a writer to believe?”

With Mabry we’ll take a look at some of these rules and talk about what writers can, can’t, should, should not, and may on occasion do as they write fiction…and why.

Mabry, who retired after 36 years as a physician, is the author of “medical suspense with heart.” His novels have been a semifinalist for International Thriller Writers’ debut novel, finalists for the ACFW Carol Award, Inspirational Reader’s Choice, and Romantic Times’ Reader’s Choice Award, as well as winner of the Selah Award with “Lethal Remedy.” He is the author of one non-fiction book “The Tender Scar: Life After The Death Of A Spouse”, ten published novels, and two novellas. His latest novel, “Medical Judgment,” is currently nominated in the Inspirational Mystery/Suspense/Thriller category of RT Reviewers Choice Best Book Award.

In addition to being part of our own ACFW DFW group, he is a proud member of the International Thriller Writers, FHL (Faith, Hope, and Love), a special interest chapter of Romance Writers of America, and Southern Writers.

JANUARY 2017 SPOTLIGHT – Harry Hall

Please join us Saturday, January 14, at 10:30am at Arlington Community Church when we welcome speaker, Harry Hall, as he presents “Through the Time Machine: Researching for Historical Fiction or Non-Fiction.”

“To effectively write about the past, we must hold our readers’ hands and invite them on the adventure. But how do we bring the era to life if we can’t visit it, or even talk to someone who was there?” Hall asks. “We must strip away our prejudices, assumptions, and feelings of nostalgia. Then we will discover a new depth to our storytelling.”

You don’t write historical fiction? Hall’s presentation is still for you as he proves that writers who research for the specifics of their books are more effective authors. According to Hall, “both fiction and non-fiction authors should research to make their characters come alive. But where do we get the information we need? How do we ‘hold our reader’s hand’ through the journey and into the past? How can we create credible characters?”

Hall spent countless hours over twelve years researching and writing “The Pedestriennes: America’s Forgotten Superstars,” the first book ever written about the professional female endurance walkers whose exploits, both on and off the track, dazzled the country from 1876-1881. “Pedestriennes” has won the Mayborn prize, Independent Publishers – or “IPPY” Award, and Writer’s Digest Award.

Hall, has more than 20 years in journalism, having written for multiple publications. His background as an award-winning radio talk show host and public speaking teacher at SMU and the University of Dallas led him to write, “Help! Everyone is Staring at Me,” a book of tips about overcoming one of our greatest fears, that of public speaking.
